Adopting a child

You can apply to adopt a child in New Zealand as a couple or as an individual.

The application process can take some time, and being approved does not necessarily mean you'll be chosen by birth parents who place their child for adoption.

At least one of the people applying must be:

  • 25 or older, and at least 20 years older than the child, or
  • 20 or older, and a relative of the child, or
  • one of the child’s parents.

You and your household must be assessed and approved as suitable to adopt a child.
