Celebrants
Only registered celebrants can perform weddings or civil unions in New Zealand.
Personalised ceremony
How much a celebrant charges is up to them. You pay them directly.
Registry ceremony
When you apply for a marriage licence, you select a celebrant and pay $150 for the licence.
You then pay a set fee of $90 to the celebrant on the day of your ceremony.
Fake celebrants and weddings
It is an offence under the Marriage Act 1955 and Civil Union Act 2004 to willingly and knowingly pretend to be a registered marriage or civil union celebrant and perform a wedding.
The consequences for pretending to be a registered marriage or civil union celebrant are serious. If convicted, the punishment may be a prison sentence of up to 5 years.
If you celebrate separately after your wedding, you cannot misrepresent that event as your legal wedding.
