Choose the gender on your citizenship record

If your gender is different to the one on your birth certificate, you can ask for your citizenship certificate to show your new gender (if you have not yet applied for citizenship), or request an evidentiary certificate (if you have been granted citizenship).

Genders you can choose to show on your certificate

You can choose:

  • male
  • female
  • non-binary.

If you are not yet a New Zealand citizen

If you are applying for or registering your New Zealand citizenship, you can ask for your citizenship certificate to show your preferred gender.

How to apply

Documents you must include

Include these 2 documents with your New Zealand citizenship application:

  • your original birth certificate
  • a statutory declaration that states:
    • the gender you want on your citizenship certificate, and
    • how long you have been living with that gender identity.

If you are aged 17 or under, you also must include statutory declarations from:

  • your parent or legal guardian, and
  • a doctor or registered counsellor.

Making a statutory declaration

If you are already a New Zealand citizen

You can request an evidentiary certificate to confirm your gender and any other changes in details since you gained citizenship.

This certificate will state:

  • your name and gender as recorded when you became a citizen
  • your new gender
  • any other changes to your details.

Cost

The fee to confirm your gender on an evidentiary certificate is $112.40.
