Selling a vehicle

If you’re selling a vehicle it must have a warrant of fitness (WoF) issued no more than 1 month before the date you hand the vehicle over to the buyer.

You need to tell NZTA that the car changed hands as soon as you sell it — you do not want speeding or parking tickets that are not yours turning up.

Notify NZTA that you’ve sold a car

Personalised plates

If you’re selling a vehicle with personalised plates, and you’re leaving the plates on the car, you’ll need to transfer entitlement of the plates to the new vehicle owner. This is different from telling the NZTA.

You and the new owner will need to complete a Transfer of Entitlement form.

On the LicenSys NZ website in the section called Transfer of entitlement you can complete the form online on download a copy.

Protect yourself

Wait for the buyer to show you proof that they’ve told the NZTA about the purchase before handing over the vehicle.

This proof could be the receipted customer section of the Notice by person acquiring motor vehicle form (MR13B) issued by an NZTA licensing agent.
