Their work covers 4 main areas:

1. Policy advice and administration of, a wide range of issues relating to veterans' entitlements, care and recognition.
2. The coordination of commemorative activities.
3. The management of the government's relationship with veterans and their representative organisations.
4. The provision of ex-service memorials and maintenance of 183 Services Cemeteries throughout NZ.
